The residents of Welwyn Hatfield are calling for a quieter motorway surface from junctions 1 to 7
in a campaign led by local MP, Grant Shapps.

STOP PRESS!  BREAKING NEWS
Thursday 17th April 2008

The Chief Executive of the Government's Highways Agency has written to Grant Shapps MP to admit that there were mistakes made in the previously supplied A1M resurfacing maps.

New maps can be downloaded here:

The upshot appears to be that the Hatfield section of the A1M will be resurfaced during the 2009/10 financial year.

But that in WGC a crucial section of the A1M (northbound near Handside Lane) is not being programmed for resurfacing at all at present.

Better news for the Ayots and Welwyn which have northbound works programmed for 2008/09.

Grant Shapps MP is to lead a delegation of local councillors to meet with the Transport Minister to discuss the situation and press for more action.

Previous news...

During a March 2007 meeting with the Highways Agency, Grant Shapps and a cross party group of local councillors expressed their concern that a noise-reduction report promised last year has still to be published.

On 30th May 2007 that report was finally received on you can read it here. Appendix E and Appendix F also below with this report.

Noise levels from the A1(M) through Welwyn Hatfield have reached unacceptable levels and local campaigner and now Member of Parliament, Grant Shapps, has launched a campaign to get something done about the problem.

Modern "whisper quiet" motorway surfaces would roughly halve the audible sound level and Grant is building a petition to be presented to the Highways Agency demanding that action is taken.

During five years of campaigning on the subject, Grant has even hired a pneumatic drill to gave the Highways Agency a taste of 78 decibels outside of their own offices!

Drilling the point home -- watch the video here

To highlight the appalling noise coming from the A1(M), Grant Shapps recently hired a pneumatic drill, stood outside the government's Highways Agency in Hatfield and gave them a taste of 78 decibels -- the equivalent of A1(M) motorway noise. If you have broadband, then you can watch the actual video here.
